FCU features content developed by nationally and internationally acclaimed industry expert, Dr. David Kohl, and content specialists at AgFirst Farm Credit Bank. Dr. Kohl is Professor Emeritus of Agricultural and Applied Economics at Virginia Tech and a leading instructor of the Graduate Schools of Banking at Colorado and LSU. Kohl conveys his decades of experience to trainees through interactive online applications and real world case studies along with “war stories” that bring life to the program.
FCU is presented in an online format, developed by ECI, a leading provider of financial analysis and decisioning software for agriculture; but online training is just the start of FCU. A mixture of face-to-face sessions with other trainees and personal interaction between the trainee and mentor provides a well-rounded educational experience. Class exercises are not just busy work, but provide solutions to local institutions’ problems and add new energy to the organization, building on institutional memory and experiences that will soon be lost due to retirements. Mentors are trained as trainers, sharing experiences of other successful mentors.
Each FCU eLearning Module consists of five components:
- An interactive Flash presentation utilizing audio and visual components with interactive exercises, like short quizzes, throughout to reinforce the content and improve retention of the material.
- Each module also includes an online objective test with instant feedback to the trainee and mentor. The test helps ensure comprehension of the content and measured results.
- Trainees are encouraged to interact with classmates through the FCU Forum, an online discussion board, which is used to discuss topics relating to each eLearning module.
- Application exercises are then completed by each trainee, which helps them apply what they have learned to their own situation on a local level.
- Trainees complete an online rating of the module to help FCU staff gauge the effectiveness of the content and delivery. Results are available instantly to mentors and supervisors online to monitor the trainee’s progress and compare performance to others in the class.
- All content accessed is electronic, thus several common technologies must be in place in order to participate in the eLearning courses available here.
